Medical Kit and Vaccinations

Travelling to Tanzania requires vaccination and some medical preparation. The preparations that should be done in advance of the trip is:

  • Getting the proper vaccinations
  • Packing a medical kit
  • Medicine

Vaccinations:
This is merely a list over what I took before I left. I advice everyone to stop by their doctor or travel healt clinic 4-8 weeks before departure to make sure that you are properly vaccinated for the trip. Here are the vaccinations that I took:

  • Tetanus-diphtheria
  • Polio
  • Yellow fever
  • Hepatitis A
  • Typhoid
  • Meningovax ACWY

Packing a medical kit:
If you travel a lot you should always have a decent medical kit in your backpack. It should contain items so that you can ease pain, stop bleeding and aid in cases of dehydration and other travel related illnesses. A good tip is to buy a already customized travel kit from your local travel shop. It should containt items such as:

  • Oral rehydration salts
  • Water purification tablets
  • Sterile needles
  • Syringes
  • Sanitary napkins
  • DEET- containing insect repellent
  • Bandages
  • Gauze and gauze rolls
  • Adhesive or paper tape
  • Ace bandage
  • Scissors
  • Pocket knife
  • Tweezers
  • Thermometer
  • Tincture of iodine
  • Moleskin (for blisters)
  • Antibacterial ointment for cuts or abrasions
  • Antidiarrheal drugs
    Antibiotic for travelers' diarrhea
  • Steroid cream

Medicine:
When travelling to Tanzania you have to be protected against Malaria. This is not possible with a vaccine. The only way to stay protected is to get prescription drugs like Malarone or Lariam. If you can afford it then Malarone is definently the best protection.
Diamox is a medicine that you can buy to speed up your bodys acclimatization. Read more about this here.
